Ok, it’s finally Sam posting again! I have been informed numerous times that I am behind on my quarterly posts. In fact, this is my first post of 2010. In my defense, our lives have significantly changed over the last 7 months!
As you’ve seen in previous posts, Dale has been starting to eat more solid foods. So far, he’s had: squash, pears, peas, carrots and then sweet peas. We tried the sweet peas last night and after his first couple pea experiences, I didn’t think this try would go any better. But, after the first bite (with an amazing face like “what on earth is that…eww!”), he continued eating whole container of the sweet peas. I thought that trying sweet peas vs. regular peas might work better for him, and it did!
I have a question for our readers, especially those parents we have out there; do you think it makes a difference whether you first feed your child vegetables or fruits? Please comment on what your opinion is because David and I have differing opinions on the matter. I think it’s important to introduce a child to vegetables first, otherwise they may never like them, whereas David doesn’t think it matters at all. For those of you who know David, he also has a big sweet tooth! No wonder why he’s advocating the sweet fruits for Dale!
Ever since we started feeding Dale the solids, I casually have remarked to David that we should get the high chair out and assembled. The casual comment usually went in one ear and out the other, so I finally took charge and got Dale’s new high chair out and ready to go! Thanks to Grandma and Grandpa Infanger for the high chair. Here is a picture of the first time Dale sat in his new high chair. He definitely enjoyed it! He’s longingly looking for his food to show up next…
Now, he sees the food and is eagerly anticipating what mom and dad have in store for him!
When this little guy smiles, he sure wraps us around his finger. I absolutely love baby gummy smiles and we are fortunate to get many of those now; I love it!

That’s the cadillac of high chairs! Nice to see you back Sammy….
I Sam, this just in from the Penetanguishene Baby Boot Camp.If you want Dale to enjoy all types of food PLEASE DO NOT START WITH FRUIT!!
Don has been counseling parent for years about this. It is a long battle if sweet is introduced first.Veg and later meat just isn’t as appealing to them after they associate meal time with sweet taste.
Follow this and you have a happy baby who grows up to enjoy a wide variety of foods and we all know how much fun that is.
Dale looks wonderfully happy and bright. He is getting so big.I am anxious to see him here on the beach.
Here’s the thing about fruits vs. vegetables – it’s an impossible hypothesis to test on your child. If it was a truism that all kids prefer sweets, than how come not all adults like sweets? And likewise, if you do decide on the route of vegetables, then fruits – why don’t the kids refuse the vegetables once they’ve tasted sweets?
But I love that Sammy finally posted…and good choice of pictures, Sam!
Isn’t that their whole point? That you get kids used to the veggies first and so since they are used to them by the time they taste fruits, they won’t refuse the veggies because they already kind of like them, even if they don’t like them nearly as much as they like fruit.
What I want to hear is if people who went the fruit first route had a hard time getting the kids to eat veggies.
SO, here is what I tell all my patients…I have this little talk that I give every parent at their 4 month visit and I always tell them to do veggies first. Then in the next sentence I say, “some people think it is an old wives tale to do veggies before fruit and it might be…so you can do whatever you want!”
There is some new studies coming out that lean toward actually not giving cereal first and starting with meats or veggies first because they are more nutritious… does kind of make sense, why would you give your kid carbs first? so they love cereal and bread?? Isnt that most of America’s problem, that we are carb addicted:)
That being said, when we start giving Julie food, she is getting veggies before fruit, just in case:)
BTW, love the picture in the high chair with no shirt on!!!
Sam, with Esteve, Gina and Marc the doctor always told me to start with fruit. Then veggies. No problem. Does it really matter? I am surprised about the question there…
)
Now that they are older, they would love to eat macarronies every day, 3 times a day, but they eat veggies once a day (mediterranian diet), they don’t prefer them but they ask for them to grow up strong and tall like their daddy…. (mommy didn’t eat too much veggies and look how short she is!
A throne fit for a king!!
Also on the fruit vs vegetables thing… does it matter? Aren’t they both healthy/have fiber/are mashed up?
